Frutiger Home Building Tips: Walls, Glass, Doors & Stairs
Frutiger Home’s builder is free-form rather than grid-based. Reviewers love that and hate it in equal measure: one praises not being constrained to a grid, another calls doors and stairs a nightmare for the same reason. These tips help with the second problem.
Snapping and overlap are your two main tools
The build bar has a Snapping toggle and an Allow Overlap toggle.
- Snapping on lines pieces up neatly. Use it for walls and floors.
- Snapping off is for decor you want slightly off-angle.
- Allow Overlap lets objects pass into each other. That is how players get shelves flush into walls, plants half sunk into planters and seamless counters made of several pieces.
When a placement goes wrong, Undo is in the bottom right next to Catalog.
Resize before you search
Almost every item can be scaled and rotated freely. Instead of looking for a longer sofa or a wider window, stretch the one you have. Combined with overlap, a few basic shapes build most custom furniture.
Glass, curves and windows
frutigerdev answered this on the Steam forum:
- You can curve the glass you place from the build section, and there are also pre-curved glass pieces.
- Windows cannot be placed into curved walls yet. The developer said it is something they can look into.
So for a rounded bay window today, build the curve from curved glass rather than window pieces.
Where is the foggy glass?
The frosted tiles in the Steam store screenshots are in the Dividers & Curtains section, the second-to-last section of the catalog. The player who asked confirmed it worked.
Doors and stairs
- Sliding doors are not placeable yet. The developer said they are coming in a future update.
- Wall gaps for doors take patience without a grid. Build the wall in two pieces either side of the doorway instead of cutting into one piece.
- Stairs are the most common building complaint. Build them with Snapping on, one step at a time, and press F to fly to check the alignment from the side.
What is in the catalog
From the build videos and the store screenshots, these are the sections players reach for most:
- Build: wall and foundation, tile, trims, glass, fences, stairs, plus window options that are easy to miss.
- Kitchen: kitchen cabinets, appliances (stove tops, toasters and more, in several colours), countertops, tableware, cookware and food.
- Decor: photo frames that take your own pictures, lamps and ceiling lights, plants, music players and desktop computers.
- Dividers & Curtains: the frosted glass tiles, second-to-last section.
Surfaces can switch between tiles, wood, wallpaper, stucco, metal and glass, and many items have separate colour zones (a keyboard body and its keys, a cabinet and its handles).
Quirks the videos ran into
- Cabinets and drawers open, and you can put items inside them in build mode.
- Not every table takes tableware. One table accepted plants but no plates, so try a different table before assuming placement is broken.
- Doors stay open, and room light can be seen through them.
- Mirrors do not reflect doors (and need ray tracing to look right at all).
- Copy a light instead of placing each one from the catalog when you are lighting corners.
- The avatar is big, so it will not fit in some showers or tight spaces.
Things you cannot change (yet)
According to reviewers, you cannot edit the structure of the pre-built houses and terrain cannot be edited. For full control, start a house from scratch. See all house options.
Colour everything
Select an item and open Edit Style: there is a swatch chart, a full colour picker, a hex box and slots for custom colours. Paint and wallpaper names are translated; patch v1.0.3 fixed them filtering wrongly in some languages.
